January 1st Haitian Independence Day

Alexander Gossin, Staff Writer

January 1st is Haitian independence day and my family are all from Haiti and celebrate it every year. We invite friends and family members and have a party. There is food and drinks and the main course is something called soup joumou. It’s a tradition to eat it every year on the 1st of January. The kids usually just play around watching tv. Teenagers are expected to help a little bit while the adults do most of the work. This tradition isn’t only with my family but Haitians around the world and back in Haiti huge parties would be hosted on one block. From what I know it’s been like this since 1804 and has not changed.
