The Highway Herald

Malyeka Charles, Staff Writer

As an introduction, my name is Malyeka Charles and I’m a student journalist for the Highway Herald. As a junior student at Teaneck High School, I’m only involved in the Black Youth Organization which I hope to change because I want to join more extracurricular activities. Interests that I have outside of school include baking, modeling, designing clothes, and fashion. After high school, I want to pursue a career in fashion design to become a fashion designer and I hope that one day I can have a successful luxury fashion brand. I’ve always known that I wanted to do something in the fashion industry since I was a young girl. A goal of mine I would like to accomplish while in high school is to do more philanthropic work like feeding the homeless, donating to foundations, and many other things. I hope at some point in my life I can be an inspiration to girls who look like me and might’ve felt like their dreams weren’t achievable. In addition, I’m a family oriented person and love spending quality time with my loved ones. Those around me would tell you that I’m sarcastic, tenacious, confident, empathetic, passionate, and many other things. I’m also a multifaceted person and there are many things I’m able to do like creating graphic designs, video editing, sewing, baking, and more because I would rather learn how to do something than pay someone to do it for me. My ethnicity is Haitian and Antiguan and I take pride in my Caribbean culture and roots. Furthermore, I decided to be a part of Highway Herald because I enjoy writing and it’s one of my strongest suits. I hope I can be an amplifying black voice and bring more fashion content to Highway Herald that’s engaging and sparks conversation for the readers.
