On November 15th, Dr. Bernie Schanzer and Mr. Henry Schanzer shared their stories with the students of Teaneck High School. Here’s what our students learned:
- I learned about the kindness of righteous gentiles, and how normal civilians would risk their lives to do the right thing.- Fatoumata
- I learned about the perspective of a kid during the event.- Hamza
- I learned that having someone to lean on and be with during hard times can be very helpful. I also learned that making family with someone you are not blood related to can be life changing.- Liora
- I learned that VERY young children were killed during the Holocaust, showing how the Nazi’s were heartless and had no mercy.- Lexi
- I learned more about their experience from their point of view.- Mickell
- I learned to always carry out hope and there might be someone there to guide you.- Luis
- You have to stay strong in tough times.- Tashi
- I learned that for some people life wasn’t all that good but people still made the best of it.- Chastity
- To always have faith even through hard times.- Javy
- I learned how quickly and how many people lost their families.- Alexander
- What I learned is that even though they faced many challenges they are still here and living.- Leilani
- Of course, I knew that the Nazis were terrible and did unforgivable things, but hearing a personal story about what they experienced from a speaker that I can see in person and not through a video or screen elevated that knowledge I had, and made me understand the horrors of the Nazi’s actions even more than I had before. – Adrian
- I learned that even though life is hard in the present, it will get better in the future when you push past boundaries. -Aaliyah
- That people were just living their normal lives and in an instant things were just changed and they had to pick up and leave everything behind.- Kevin
- Even when hope seems all lost there’s still a chance for things to get better and they are living proof of that. – Alex
- I learned that the victims of war are usually forgotten and that the stories usually live on by generations telling the story to the next.- Alicia
- From the experiences talked about by Dr.Bernie, and Henry Schanzer, I have learned that with what they encountered at a young age and how that impacted their childhood can only teach us to not repeat the past and learn from these events to not affect our ongoing generation.- Muntaha
- Resilience, courage, etc. We need to learn from history and make sure nothing like it happens ever again.- Tova.
- I learned that they had life or death ahead of them and they moved hastily and quietly.-Victoria
- That even if the chances are slim and the world seems to be against you, it’s important to keep hanging onto hope. – Isabella
- I learned that your way of life can change in an instant, at any given point, and time.- Brooke
